18th Century Alabaster Shan Buddha Statue seated on a double Lotus pedestal, wearing a simple monk’s robe with incised decoration around the hem with the right hand in bhumisparsa Mudra with the left hand resting palm facing upwards in his lap in the gesture of meditation (dhyana Mudra).

A bracelet in the same pattern that decorates the edges of the robe is carved into the wrist above the right hand which is a little unusual for this style of Shan Buddha statue and is more often seen in the royal king Buddha statues dressed in royal attire. This statue was once gilded, with traces of gilt remaining. We are assuming that the gilding has been scraped away, it is possible that during hard times the gilding was removed.

The reddish-brown lacquer is traditionally used in Myanmar as an undercoat, traditionally used in Burma in preparation for gilding.
